Vintage Panties
Pantsu Hunter: Back to the 90’s is a point-and-click visual novel that takes you back to an earlier era while still allowing you to go after girls in some odd ways, as is paramount to the visual novel genre. You are Kenji, a jack of all trades who is trying to find the love of his life while he has some free time. Meet four different girls and do your best to help them out, spend some time with them, and steal their precious panties. Why would a man looking for love chance the panty escapades you ask? Oh, it’s simple: he can read the personality of each girl by the various types of panties she owns, of course.
Rinse and Repeat
This title leans into a point-and-click background for its gameplay mechanics, as the main function of the game is to survey a room, find items you can use, and run through various scenarios in order to find different endings. You have dozens of different ways this can go for each girl, as well as tons of variation in how you get there, as is also commonplace in point-and-click titles. Also, with that in mind, you have some crazy combinations coming your way, and a ton of trial and error in order to get there. A skip function, and fast dialogue options help with this, but you still have a ton of repetition, which is common with visual novels, but with the experiences being so short you also don’t have the option to have a ton of change happening with each run. The vintage aesthetic is a nice change-up to the model and adds a visual upgrade over the basic art styles used in visual novels.
Quantity Over Quality
You have a lot of good in Pantsu Hunter. The visuals are the best thing you will find in this one, but you have a ton of lacking qualities you would hope for in this type of game. Player-friendly options are scarce, the game is short and chooses to go for tons of little bits of story rather than something you can really dive into, and the tried and true point-and-click method to gameplay is well versed, but doesn’t bring a ton of new ideas to the table. With all of that said, the experience is enjoyable if you can take it for what it is: an interesting title set in a nostalgic era that will be something enjoyed by people who are okay with used tropes of the visual novel and point-and-click genres.
